  •    Flying Fish and Fine Art

This is going to be a GREAT event. Many of the people involved are also involved in the Houston International Festival and the Bayou City Art Festival.

I don’t have the full entertainment schedule yet, but The Flying Fish Sailors will be headlining on the main stage on Sunday afternoon at 5:30 pm.

A new fine art festival has been added to the spring Texas fine art festival tour!

Produced by The Art Colony Association, celebrating 35 years of independent artist support through fine art festivals, and presenters of the nationally ranked Bayou City Art Festivals, Houston.

The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival is a juried fine art festival featuring 200 national, and regional artists selling their original creations along a 1.25mile waterway park. The wonderfully landscaped site with water taxi service along the whole festival makes this a unique event that artists and patrons will enjoy.

Aqua Velva, Houston’s only and by default, best B-52’s cover band, Clouseaux, a band that defies description…lounge, tiki and eclectic are good adjectives to start with and The Flying Fish Sailors…all combined for one evening and it’s a pajama party to boot!

Molly and the Ringwalds will be doing they’re usual happy hour show from 7-9ish. There’s no guarantee they will wear pajamas but the rest of us will be adorned appropriately. Wear yours and get in free!

  •    Olden days

The Flying Fish Sailors had a very humble, yet ambitious beginning. This is a photo from our first live performance (circa 1988) at what was then known as The Wellington Stone on W. Alabama in the Montrose area of Houston.

Left to right: Jay Lee, Greg Henkel and Joseph Linbeck.

  •    Samples from Poke You In The Eye

Poke You In The Eye Title track written by Jay Lee

Dollar General Dollar is a song written and sung by our fiddle player, Greg Henkel. Check out the Morricone bridges in this song.

Rain is our skewed interpretation of the semi-obscure Beatles song (the “b” side of the single “Paperback Writer”). This song is the direct result of our fiddle player’s brother Jim joining the band. You may have seen him play as the guitarist for Beetle, Light Rock Express and The El Orbits.

London Homesick Blues is just one of those songs we just had to record. It is an overplayed Texas anthem to be sure. Jay Lee sings this as a duet with Pete Gordon (aka The Dazzling Pete Gray of The El Orbits, aka Wet Dawg of Mojo Nixon and the Toadliquers fame, aka good friend and manager of the Continental Club). His piano playing is second to none and makes this song shine (IMHO).

  •    Impromptu free show!

Members of the Flying Fish Sailors are playing an impromptu show at Sig’s Lagoon on Wednesday night, Jan 25th. It’s going to be Jim, Greg and Jay from 9:15 to 10:00 pm.

It’s part of Greg’s birthday celebration going on that evening.

If you have a chance, stop on by as it’s open to the public and free.
